Most trailing petunias only grow to a height of 6 inches. However, they can achieve a 36 inch spread.

They can be effectively used as a temporary ground cover in a sunny area. They also look spectacular flowing out of window boxes or spilling over the rim of an urn.

The following hybrids make superb petunia hanging baskets:

Wave Petunia

The Wave petunia forms a ground-hugging floral carpet 6 inches tall by up to 48 inches wide. Space these clear pink, hot pink, pale lavender or purple petunias 1-2 feet apart.

The purple Wave petunia is especially effective cascading over the top of a rock wall in front of tall desert plants with silvery leaves.

The red Wave petunia will add drama to a patio when massed alone in low box planters. The bright blooms will eventually spread out of the planter and creep across the patio floor. Just keep it trimmed back enough so that you can walk around it.

These 10 by 36 inch plants bloom intense pink with a contrasting white and yellow eye. They differ from the original Wave petunias in that they are taller and more mounding.

They are also self-cleaning and more tolerant of dry soil though I would not go as far as to say that they are drought tolerant.

Double Wave Petunia

“Petunia, Summer Madness Double Hybrid 1 Pkt. (25 seeds)”

This is a double petunia with frilly, femminine flowers. It performs like a Wave petunia but, at just 24 inches wide, has a more compact growth habit. This is one of the best varieties for petunia hanging baskets. Chose from white, several shades of pink, lavendar and dark purple.

Tidal Wave Petunias

At 15-20 inches, this is one of the tallest growing of the cascading petunias. Tidal Wave petunias have been known to achieve an impressive 60 inch spread! They are available in several shades of pink and make an awesome, thick ground cover.

When grown in a tall pot, they will trail to the ground and may completely hide the container.

Space plants 24 inches apart.

Cascadia Petunia

Petunia grandiflora ‘Blue Spark Cascadia’ is a long blooming, trailing petunia hybrida. It displays gorgeous lavender and white bi-colored flowers from early spring until the first frost.

It is loved for its compact growth habit (stems will cascade to 10 inches) and for the fact that deer do not bother it. This is one of the most tender varieties so plan your planting time accordingly.

‘Blue Spark’ is not the only cascadia petunia. Others in the series include ‘Mystic Pink’, ‘Mystic Purple’ which looks more pink than purple to me, ‘Sunray’ which is white with a big yellow star-shaped eye, and ‘Lime’. Most grow 12 by 18 inches.

Super Petunias

Buy Petunia, Baby Duck 1 Pkt. (15 seeds)

This is a series of cascading petunia hybrids that features single and double blooms in several solid colors as well as a few bi-colored varieties. They grow 1 foot tall and 2 feet wide and are great container gardening petunias.

The ‘Bordeaux’ Supertnia petunia is one of the most popular in this series. Its continuous production of lavender flowers with a large deep purple throat may be one reason. Their easy maintenance may be another. They will continue to bloom without deadheading and they will not become leggy if you don’t pinch them back.

And if all that is not enough, ‘Bordeaux’ Supertunia is a perennial petunia in zones 9-11. This places it in a class apart from all other cascading petunias.
