Landscaping with boulders in Nassau, Bahamas.

This personality rock is a focal point in a garden in the city of Nassau on the island of New Providence in the Bahamas. It looks as if it has a face.

When it rains, the natural depression in the top will hold water making it a valuable garden feature for birds and butterflies who need a rough surface to stand on while bathing or sipping.

The plants surrounding this eye-catching stone are red fountain grassplumbago and the colorful croton plant.

This small rock garden is also located in the beautiful city of Nassau. Here, the boulders are interspersed with agave and Crown of Thorns plants.

The Blue Agave plants are an especially fitting choice. Their glaucous leaves compliment the gray color of the boulders.

This bluish tint is repeated in the bold fans of the Bismarck palm. The yellow-flowered tree beside the Bismarckia is Tacoma stans whose trumpet-shaped bloom is the official flower of the U.S. Virgin Islands.

Crushed landscaping rock, like that depicted here, is an excellent mulch for a boulder garden.

This Florida rock garden is situated on a gently sloping mound. Good landscape design principles have been adhered to in this planting. The tallest plant, a Queen palm tree is placed at the top.

A mature Swamp lily is sending up bloom stalks right in front of the palm. Further down the slope, a clump of Fountain grass adds its pinkish plumes to the display.

Coleus plants have been clipped into little balls, much as you might expect boxwood to be treated, and used as an edging.

Another way of landscaping with boulders is to stack 2 or 3 large rocks at the base of a specimen plant as has been done outside this gazebo.

The boulders serve to draw attention to the plant, in this case, a clump of Pygmy Dates.
